We’re looking for an energetic, detail-oriented person to help with in-person and eCommerce retail operations at Maydel. Maydel is a fast-growing craft company whose mission is to encourage accessibility and responsibility in craft while supporting our local and creative communities. All work hours will take place at our store and studio in Chicago’s Ravenswood neighborhood. You must be available to work at least 15 hours per week, including from 10:45am–4:15pm on Saturdays. Other work hours are more flexible, but must take place between 10am–4pm on weekdays for the first three months of employment.
Some of the main functions of this role include:
- Shipping and receiving: Assist in packing and shipping outgoing orders and entering/restocking all inventory that arrives.
- Customer service: Assist in checking out in-person shoppers, and responding to customer questions and concerns in person, by phone, and via email.
- Product photography: Assist in shooting and editing photos of new products.
- Website updates: Assist in creating new website pages and implementing performance and usability improvements.
- Maintenance of the space: Assist in re-stocking and tidying inventory, setting up for classes, and cleaning common areas.
- Documenting processes: Assist in writing and/or recording on video the steps necessary to complete any recurring tasks.
- Coordinating trade and wholesale orders: Assist in opening new accounts, preparing invoices, and submitting orders to manufacturers.
This position is best suited to a person who is eager to learn about entrepreneurship and the craft industry by helping to build a company during its early days. They will have the opportunity to impact the growth of their own role and the company as a whole. The ideal candidate will have natural curiosity and be open about giving and receiving feedback.
Doing this job well requires the following:
- Excellent attention to detail
- Strong communication and customer service skills in English
- The ability to manage tesks independently and to seek help when needed
- Time management skills to ensure deadlines are met
- General tech-savviness and comfort/confidence working with computers and cloud-based software. Familiarity with website content management systems (e.g., WooCommerce), photo editing software (e.g. Photoshop), and/or video editing software (e.g. Premiere) is a plus
Physical demands:
- Must be able to stand for up to 8 hours per day.
- Must be able to complete tasks and reach other areas of the property in a timely manner.
- Must be able to lift up to 35 lbs.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, squat and stretch to perform daily tasks.
- Requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity.
- Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with guests and supervisor.
- Vision occurs continuously with the most common visual functions being those of near vision and depth perception.
- Requires manual dexterity to use and operate all necessary equipment.
- Must be able to work well under pressure, managing multiple deadlines.

Starting compensation is $20/hr at 15–20 hrs per week, with the potential to add more hours and/or to work full-time after 12 months. Paid leave is provided in accordance with Chicago’s Paid Leave Ordinance.
