Job: Retail Assistant
Job Overview
Gnome Brew is seeking a Retail Assistant to join our team in a specialty retail environment centered on fermentation—particularly beer—and draft systems, with an emphasis on customer service and hands-on learning.
This position combines core retail, hospitality, and hands-on fermentation tasks and is ideal for someone with a strong interest in beer, brewing, and fermentation who wants to build skills over time.
While this is a part-time position to start, candidates who demonstrate consistency, take ownership of their work, and build knowledge and trust will have opportunities to take on more responsibility and more hours over time.
Initial Job Responsibilities:
- Commit to fulfilling Gnome Brew’s mission and providing outstanding hospitality and service
- Engage with customers in a friendly, knowledgeable, and honest manner
- Fill online orders accurately and efficiently
- Build and package recipe kits
- Package bulk products for sale
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and appearance of the store
- Take regular inventory of stock
- Assist with store fermentation projects, including transferring, bottling, cleaning equipment, and related hands-on production tasks
Additional Responsibilities (Learned Over Time):
- Expanded fermentation and brewing tasks
- Draft system knowledge, cleaning, and basic servicing
- Deeper product and process knowledge to support customers at a higher level
- Additional operational responsibilities as skills and availability grow
Schedule & Availability Requirements:
- Maintain a consistent weekly schedule
- Work at least one weekend day
- Work at least two weekdays
- Approximately 25 hours per week to start
- Opportunities for additional hours over time for the right candidate
- Work non-major holidays
Requirements:
- Demonstrable interest in beer, brewing, or fermentation
- Hospitality-forward mindset and comfort working with customers
- Intention to work with us 1+ year
- Lift up to 55 pounds
- Climb a ladder
- Tolerate exposure to wheat, oats, dust, and other possible allergens
- Work with caustic cleaning chemicals
- Read, write, and speak proficient English
- Maintain appearance and dress that reflect values of hospitality and inclusion toward all, particularly with respect to gender identity, race, religion, politics, age, etc.
Ideal Candidates May Have Some of the Following:
- Hospitality, service, or specialty retail background
- Passion for beer and fermentation
- Homebrewing or brewing experience
- Curiosity and eagerness to learn technical skills
- Interest in taking on more responsibility and hours over time
- Experience with social media, newsletters, or website content
